Jane McGonigal - Changing Minds One Game At A Time

Gaming is a way of life, not a way to pass the time.

This has been Jane McGonigal's philosophy which has made her one of the leading game designers in the world.

McGonigal has been developing commercial games for over a decade and focuses specifically on alternate reality games and massively multiplayer online gaming. She believes gaming can be used to fix social ills and is working towards changing the perception of gamers. She's also written two books called Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make us Better and How they Can Change the World and SuperBetter: A Revolutionary Approach to Getting Stronger, Happier, Braver, and More Resilient.

She is one of the speakers in the BCX Disrupt Summit currently taking place in Kyalami.

“A game is an opportunity to focus our energy, with relentless optimism, at something we’re good at (or getting better at) and enjoy. In other words, gameplay is the direct emotional opposite of depression.”

- Jane McGonigal

“If you are a gamer, it’s time to get over any regret you might feel about spending so much time playing games. You have not been wasting your time. You have been building up a wealth of virtual experience that can teach you about your true self: what your core strengths are, what really motivates you, and what makes you happiest.”

- Jane McGonigal

"Today, I look forward and I see a future in which games once again, are explicitly designed to improve quality of life, to prevent suffering, and to create real, widespread happiness.”
