Bonang On The Importance Of Mentorship

Bonang Matheba is the quintessential IT girl and has legions of fans who support her. While she is looked up to as a role model, she has had her own pillars of strength and sources of inspiration.

During an interview with Azania Mosaka on Real Talk on SABC 3, the media personality named some powerhouses in the industry that have mentored her such as Basetsana Kumalo, Khanyi Dhlomo and Bob Mabena.

"There are a lot of people who have been involved, who have moulded and helped build brand Bonang," she said.

During the talk show Kumalo spoke of spotting Matheba when the 30-year-old was still a presenter for music show Live on SABC 1.

"I think the first time I sighted Bonang was on Live, watching television and here was this young lady with lots of energy, somebody who just came with her own signature. And I thought here's a new talent," Kumalo said.

It took many years and several failed auditions before finally landing a coveted job as one of the presenters on luxury lifestyle show Top Billing. Soon afterwards, she was named one of three hosts on entertainment talk show Afternoon Express. Both shows fall under Kumalo's production company Tswelopele Productions.

She said seeing Matheba's career and personal growth over the years bears testament to her work ethic.

"Bonang works hard. Bonang dares. Bonang is not afraid to fail. More so she continues to perfect her craft in anything that she does. When she cites me as one of her mentors it makes me think that maybe I have done something right that young people have learned something from my generation."
